From the London Gazetteer, October 19, 1749.
TO HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS THE Prince OF WALES.
[quotation in Latin]
Accept, great Prince, in these degenerate days,
The willing tribute of impartial praise:
No venal bard, that flatters to be fed,
And, like the ballad-monger, sings for bread;
Sues for a place in prostituted notes,
And sells his patron rhimes for want of votes.
This muse to merit pays her sole regard,
(True praise, like virtue, is its own reward:)
Inspir'd by that, her humble gift she brings,
But, conscious of her weakness, trembling sings.
